A good kick off point is to head for the highest point to get your bearings. Here, head 328m up the Sky Tower for unsurpassed wraparound views of up to 80 km in every direction. You can even jump off – attached to a bungy cord of course.
Then consider the Botanic Gardens, highly regarded War Memorial Museum or a ferry over to pretty Devonport or Waiheke Island for lunch at Mudbrick Vineyard. The beaches and olive groves here are delightful.
The bustling Britomart waterfront district offers great shopping and enticing restaurants. You can even take a trip on an America’s Cup yacht or head out to Hauraki Gulf Marine Park to spot whales and dolphins.
Activity buffs head to the Waitakere Ranges while the west coast, with its black volcanic sand beaches at Muriwai, Bethells, Piha and Karekare, appeal to a more relaxed crowd.

Slovenia is something of a hidden gem when it comes to holiday destinations. Like its neighbour, Croatia, it remains largely unblighted by mass tourism, making it the perfect place for a get-away-from-it-all holiday. The capital, Ljubljana is a vibrant city with a colourful central market, beautiful architecture and an impressive castle.
What Lonely Planet says:
"If one word could describe Slovenia it would be green – literally and figuratively. Some two-thirds of the nation is forested, and the ‘Slovenia Green’ eco certification is among Europe’s most rigorous. This is the place to come for unheralded wine and culinary prowess plus hiking and cycling trails wedged between the Alps and the Adriatic."
Experience the best of both Croatia and Slovenia on our 23-day tailor-made Explore Croatia & Slovenia tour and 25-day escorted Croatia & Slovenia Discovery tour.
