In May of this year, my husband, Hans and I left our home in Lancashire to begin a five-week trip to Australia which included Darwin in the Northern Territory before travelling by Ghan train through the Outback to Adelaide in the south before flying to Tasmania.

In March, whilst visiting family in Melbourne, I visited Hobart, capital of Tasmania. I've travelled around much of Victoria, the Red Centre, and part of New South Wales, including Sydney, but Hobart was so strikingly unique. Its centre is largely historical compared to those of Melbourne and Sydney. Its waterfront is lined with old maritime warehouses, harking back to its colonial and whaling past, and there are few tall buildings. It just felt like a different pace of life.

The year is 1787; the British set sail on an eight-month journey to 'New Holland' to establish a new penal colony. Convict transportation was already a tried and tested method of ridding the 'motherland' of criminals. However, since the American Revolution of 1776...

The Barossa Valley is a wine-growing region located in South East Australia, about an hour's drive from Adelaide. The Barossa region is 352 square miles in size and has a total of 11,609 hectares of vineyards. The region's climate ranges from warm on the valley floor to cool at the higher altitudes in the hills surrounding the Valley, which help to produce wines of a very different character. The region's unique microclimate and ancient red clay soils produce some of the most acclaimed examples of these varietals in the world.
