A brief history

Daylesford's history stretches back to its indigenous roots, with the Djadja Wurrung people as the area's original inhabitants. They considered the land sacred, especially the mineral springs, which they believed had healing properties.

In 1848, Irish immigrant John Egan discovered alluvial gold in the area now covered by Lake Daylesford, triggering a local gold rush and driving European settlement. The discovery of the mineral springs in 1852 added a new dimension to Daylesford's allure. The springs, rich in magnesium, calcium, and other minerals, were soon reputed for their health benefits. By the late 19th century, the therapeutic qualities of the waters had turned the town into a popular retreat, drawing visitors seeking to cure various ailments.

The town's development was marked by the construction of bathhouses and spa facilities, catering to the influx of health seekers. In the early 20th century, Daylesford solidified its reputation as a leading spa destination, with numerous facilities offering mineral baths and treatments. Today, Daylesford's mineral springs remain a key attraction, integrated into modern wellness retreats and spa resorts. Visitors continue to enjoy the purported benefits of the waters, including improved circulation and stress relief while immersing themselves in the town's rich cultural and artistic heritage.

Health benefits

The waters, naturally infused with minerals such as magnesium, calcium, bicarbonate, and silica, are thought to alleviate a range of ailments and improve overall wellbeing.

Magnesium, a key component of the waters, is believed to enhance muscle relaxation, reduce inflammation, and improve circulation, which supports cardiovascular health. This can help with conditions such as muscle cramps and tension, as well as aiding stress reduction, contributing to better sleep, promoting a balanced mood, and enhancing overall relaxation.

Magnesium is found in seeds, nuts, beans and legumes, grains, green leafy veg, high cocoa chocolate (min 85% cocoa), bananas, avocado, fish and seafood.

It is recommended in the UK that men get up to 300mg and women up to 270mg of magnesium a day. But don't worry about getting more than your daily dose in Daylesford. For healthy people, excess magnesium is excreted by the kidneys as urine.

Calcium helps maintain strong bones and teeth, aiding the prevention of osteoporosis and fractures, and supports proper nerve function. Mentally, calcium plays a crucial role in neurotransmitter function, helping to regulate mood and prevent mood swings.

Calcium is found in cheese, milk (including skimmed, semi-skimmed, whole and soya), yoghurt (including plain, low-fat and soya), tofu, canned fish (including sardines and pink salmon), baked beans, some fruit and veg (such as dried figs, kidney beans, cabbage, broccoli, tinned tomatoes, and oranges), and some carbohydrates (such as white pitta bread, plain naan bread, white and wholemeal bread, and white pasta).

It is recommended in the UK that adults consume up to 700mg of calcium a day. The amount varies for children, teenage boys and girls, and pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Bicarbonate acts as a natural antacid, neutralising stomach acid and relieving indigestion and heartburn. It also supports the body's detoxification processes, aiding liver function and metabolic health. The detoxifying effects of bicarbonate can lead to enhanced mental clarity and cognitive function. This dual action helps to maintain digestive health and promote a clearer, more focused mind.

Silica supports collagen production, enhancing skin elasticity and contributing to healthier hair and nails. Additionally, it aids in joint health by reinforcing connective tissues, potentially reducing joint pain and stiffness. It can also boost self-confidence and mental resilience.

Visitors can sample the spring water or indulge in a spa treatment at the nearby Hepburn Bathhouse and Spa (can get busy at peak times), experiencing the rejuvenating benefits of the mineral-rich waters.

Our experience
Ben, our in-house graphic designer, visited Daylesford in 2023 as part of a trip to Melbourne and Tasmania (see Australia's Convict Sites: A Darker Side of History and Spotlight on: Hobart). He recalls tasting the waters at Hepburn Mineral Springs Reserve.

"Back home in the UK, I live in the Kentish spa town of Tunbridge Wells, famous for its iron-rich chalybeate spring. Those who have ever had the misfortune of sipping on this tonic will understand why I was a little apprehensive about trying the waters at Hepburn Springs. Along the walking trail are various information boards, alongside which are taps (it's all a bit 'Alice in Wonderland - Drink me'). There are multiple taps along the walking trail from soda (naturally carbonated with a warm, mineral taste) to sulphur (a slight eggy flavour...). Its quite a sensory experience and has stuck fondly in my mind."

Our recommendation
The Mineral Spa at Mineral Spring Hotel is an acclaimed day spa in Hepburn, a short drive north of Daylesford.  Make use of the spa's steam room, lavender sauna, detox box, outdoor sun deck, outdoor mineral water spas and cold plunge pool, and treat yourself to rejuvenating massages and mineral bathing.
