America’s incredible diversity is best explored on a motorhome holiday, choose where you want to stop, how long you want to stay for and travel at your own pace.

Motorhome holidays are a popular choice for couples and families and are great for those who like to explore and get off the beaten track. However, if you prefer more structure to your holiday, we have suggested itineraries with recommended campsites and others where we can pre-book your campsites for you.

Major Cities

The US’s major cities include New York, Boston, Washington DC (the capital), Philadelphia, Chicago, Denver, Dallas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Climate

The southern states enjoy long, warm summers although humidity can be high in some areas, the more northern states enjoy nice warm summers but can be much cooler in the winter.

Languages

English is the most commonly used language in the USA, followed by Spanish.

Currency and Money

The currency in America is the US dollar and the famous green notes are probably the most recognisable currency in the world. ATM’s can be found just about everywhere, and all cities will have places where you can exchange currency into dollars.

Taxes

In America you can expect to pay between 2.9% and 7.25% in sales tax which is on top of the advertised price.

Tipping

Tipping is an established and accepted custom in America. For good service, waiters and taxi drivers expect 15-20%, and counter and bar staff 10-15%. Porters can expect from $3-$5 per case, while tour guides can be given the equivalent of £2-£3 per day.

Hotels

In the USA it is standard practice for many hotels and resorts to charge a mandatory resort fee which is payable locally. This fee can vary between $5 to $40 per room per night and cannot be included in the cost of your holiday.

Passports

Your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay. No additional period of validity beyond this is required

Visas

You’ll need to get a visa or an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) visa waiver to enter or transit the USA as a visitor. The ESTA allows approved applicants to travel to the USA for up to 90 days for the purpose of tourism, certain types of business visits, and transit to another country.

United States - ESTA, APIS and SFPD

Eligible travellers (travelling to United States) must apply online for authorisation under the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) process, costing US$14 (approx £9) per person. Please click here to apply online.
