Itinerary

Distance: 72km (45miles)

Pick up your motorhome and head northeast on the Glenn Highway through the townships of Eagle River and Chugiak as you continue on towards Palmer. As you head through the Eklutna Flats, you’ll be able to see the towering vistas of the Chugach and Talkeetna Mountains, and catch a glimpse of Pioneer Peak in the distance. If you would like closer view of Knick Glacier, then you could take an airboat tour which operates about 20 miles from Palmer.

Suggested Campsite: Mountain View RV Park

Distance: 320km (200miles)

Today you will drive through the Matanuska-Susitna Valley and Denali State Park. Denali is six million acres of wildland, bisected by one ribbon of road and as you along it you will see the relatively low-elevation taiga forest give way to high alpine tundra and snowy mountains, culminating in North America’s tallest peak, Mount McKinley/Denali at 20,320 feet. As wild animals large and small roam across the unfenced lands, there may be opportunities to see them in their natural environment.

Suggested Campsite: Riley Creek Campground

Distance: 200km (125miles)

Continue your journey along the Parks Highway with its incredible forest and mountain landscapes to Fairbanks. Drive through the communities of Healy, Nenana and by the community of Ester, an old gold mining camp. Once in Fairbanks we recommend a wildlife tour where with some luck you may see bears, caribou, moose, sheep, wolves and a variety of birds.

Suggested Campsite: Rivers Edge Resort RV Park

Distance: 288km (180miles)

As you leave Fairbanks you may want to make a stop at the North Pole, the home of North America’s Santa Claus before following the Richardson Highway to Delta Junction. Once at Delta Junction you will continue on the Richardson Highway and drive south towards Paxson/Glennallen where The Copper River has world class salmon fishing and if you don’t feel like fishing there is hiking, rafting and even flightseeing available.

Suggested Campsite: Tolsona Wilderness Campground

Distance: 296km (185miles)

Enjoy a spectacular drive on the Richardson Highway where part of the route runs parallels with the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and where if the weather permits, make some stops to enjoy some incredible views of the Wrangell Mountains.

Continue to Worthington Glacier and through Keystone Canyon with its waterfalls and on to Valdez, a must see on any Alaskan itinerary with its crashing glaciers and the towering Chugach mountains that rise from the sea.

Suggested Campsite: Bear Paw RV Park

Distance: 136km (85miles)

This morning you will board the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry to Whittier and travel across the beautiful Prince William Sound. On arrival in Whittier you will drive through the Whittier Portage Tunnel (one-lane tunnel, open to traffic during certain hours only) and continue via the Seward Highway with its scenic landscapes to Seward.

Portage Glacier and the Begich, Boggs Visitor Centre are interesting stops with exhibits that let visitors walk through a simulated ice cave, view live ice worms or touch an iceberg. For those seeking a closer look at Portage Glacier, there are hour-long sightseeing boat cruises on Portage Lake, or you can hike a number of foot trails that wind near the frozen monument.

Suggested Campsite: Stoney Creek RV Park

This morning you will make the short journey back to the motorhome depot to return your motorhome before transferring to the airport for your onward journey.
