One Day Bruny Island Tour

Maria Island Day Tour

Step back in time, slow down and enjoy a big day out on this island National Park. Maria Island has a diverse range of highlights including convict history, spectacular coastal cliffs and deserted beaches. Access to the island is by Ferry for foot passengers only (no cars on this island). Bring comfortable walking shoes ready to stretch your legs and explore this island paradise.

Just one hour's drive from Hobart to the ferry and 45 minutes across the water, brings us to Maria Island - a stunning island National Park. It is rich in local wildlife, amazing scenery and world heritage convict history. We enjoy a series of moderate walks exploring the beautiful Painted Cliffs, the dramatic Fossil Cliffs and the remarkable Darlington World Heritage convict site. With no cars on the island the area is peaceful, beautiful, the pace is slow and relaxed, and the beaches are perfect for summer swimming.

This is a tour for active travellers who are keen to walk and enjoy this unique island. Setting out on foot we have 2 main walking trails for the day, covering a total distance of almost 10 kilometres. Both of our walks are categorised as Great Short Walks of Tasmania. The Painted Cliffs Walk at Hopground Beach feature the beautifully patterned sandstone cliffs. The Fossil Cliffs walk, takes us along to amazing cliffs that drop sheer into the ocean. It offers a fascinating insight into the past environments of Maria Island along with expansive views of the Freycinet Peninsula. Have an opportunity to swim, photograph and soak up the island life as Maria works its magic on you.

Maria Island is a National Park so we are exposed to all that nature will offer on the day, so please come prepared. The island is a haven for abundant wildlife, it is one of Tasmania's bird watching hot spots. Wombats can also be seen around the island, as well as Pademelons, Forester Kangaroos, Bennetts wallabies and Tasmanian Devils. Even the ferry ride is part of the highlights of the day, the waters we cross are also abundant in sea life, we keep our eyes peeled for dolphins, seals and penguins along the way. Join us on this day of discovery rich in environmental and cultural history.

Overlooking the Brighton Valley, Bonorong Wildlife Conservation Park offers close-up experiences of Australian native animals. Visit Richmond, a Georgian style village resplendent with mellow stone cottages will take you back in time to the convict days.

Hobarts Whiskey Trail (full day)

Start your day with an introductory tour of Tasmania's capital. Hobart is a quaint city which features many preserved colonial sandstone buildings. The vibrant waterfront was once the hub of a thriving whaling industry. Stroll through nearby Battery Point where the historic buildings vary from grand homes to humble worker's cottages.

Visit one of Australia's leading distilleries and hear about the craft of whisky distillation at the historic cellar door. After you have been fortified with a taste of their single malt, continue to the winner of the 2014 World Whisky Award for best single malt. Sullivan's Cove's French Oak Cask was judged the global winner, as well as Australia's best, from a high-quality pool of single malt entries. Visit a quaint family-run distillery before your return to Hobart.

After Dark Feeding Tour (75 minutes)

Join your tour at Devils@Cradle Reception to commence an After Dark Feeding Tour. The after dark feeding tour commences in the interpretation centre with a short film followed by a summary of conservation work. The second part of the tour involves a walk outside amongst a large breeding group of Tasmanian devils. Your guide will enter the enclosures and feed a number of these animals whilst interpreting their behaviour and answering any questions you may have. Tour concludes approximately 75 minutes after commencement.

Joey Encounter (40 minutes)

Join your tour at Devils@Cradle Reception to commence the Joey Encounter. This tour takes a small group of visitors into one of the behind the scenes areas, the animal nursery. Here they will have the opportunity to meet, learn about, and experience up-close encounters with these animals. They may also have the opportunity to observe the keepers feeding, or conducting health checks and animal conditioning.

Dine with the Devil (1 hour)

Join your tour at Devils@Cradle Reception to commence a Dine with the Devil tour. Tour commences on the viewing deck where you have the opportunity for some close up encounters with some of the animals whilst enjoying some Tasmanian produce. Next enjoy a guided walk around the sanctuary, ending at the largest Tasmanian Devil enclosure with a campfire, watching a group of Tasmanian Devils feeding.

Platypus House Guided Tour (50 minutes)

Make your own way to join a Platypus House fully guided tour. Platypus House offers a rare and unique undercover opportunity to watch live platypuses and echidnas during the day. Platypus House was established to help educate and build public awareness about the amazing monotremes. Join our guides on an unforgettable fun and educational experience suitable for all ages. Watch them feeding and playing as you tour through the ponds and the echidna garden.

Seahorse World Fully Guided Tour (50 minutes)

Join your Seahorse World tour at Shed 1A Inspection Head Wharf, at Beauty Point to commence a Seahorse World Fully Guided Tour. Seahorse World provides a fun-filled educational tour of the world's first seahorse farm and the Southern Ocean Aquarium. The secret life of seahorses is revealed and their unique characteristics amaze visitors. They are the only animal on earth where the male gives birth. After the farm, visitors move into the Southern Ocean Aquarium where they can see other bizarre creatures of these waters including the Weedy Sea dragon, giant Tasmanian Crab (world's 2nd largest crab species), cuttlefish, local sharks, octopus and dozens of others.

Cataract Gorge Cruise (50 minutes)

Cruise past historical Kings Wharf, Seaport and Launceston's delightful riverfront precinct. The highlight of the experience is cruising into Launceston's spectacular Cataract Gorge, as the Lady Launceston's unique electric drive is engaged. View the sheer cliffs from your comfortable seat, appreciate the unobstructed views on the multi award winning 1890s style vessel and enjoy the skipper's captivating commentary on the history of this fascinating area.

Let’s do Lunch (2 ½ hours)

Arrive in the beautiful grounds of Josef Chromy Wines and take a stroll through the gardens established in 1888. Enjoy a complimentary tasting at our Cellar Door and then retire to the Restaurant for a two course lunch of fine Tasmanian produce matched with wines.

Wilderness Cruise (3 hours)

Robert Pennicott's award-winning three hour wilderness and wildlife cruise takes you along the spectacular coastline between Eaglehawk Neck and Port Arthur. Travel beneath the highest vertical sea cliffs in the Southern Hemisphere at Cape Pillar, and explore waterfalls, rock formations, archways and deep sea caves. The coastline is home to a variety of wildlife including seals, migrating whales, dolphins and abundant sea birds. The custom built boats are ideal for viewing the spectacular coastline and wildlife with covered open-aired seating providing an excellent all round view and connection with the environment.

Two Capes and Tasman Helicopter Flight (30 minutes)

Think thirty minutes of epic icons Port Arthur Historic Site, rugged capes, Tasman Island and Shipstern Buff. Get your natural high over some of the world's tallest sea cliffs. What’s more, with club seating, everyone is assured a window seat. Rise up through the gums at Osborne's heli pad as the grand Tasman Peninsula reveals. Track south over Port Arthur Historic Site and out to Cape Pillar, home to towering dolerite cliffs. Spot the coast-hugging Three Capes Track down below. Circling above Tasman Island, muse over long past lighthouse keepers of this remote outpost. Next, it's out to Cape Raoul, once used as target practice by the British Army. See why Crescent Bay turns heads with its refined white-sand curve. Down at Shipsterns, watch for surfers drawn by heaving southern swell to this famed break.

West Coast Wilderness Rail – River and Rainforest (Heritage Carriage)

A half day train journey departing the picturesque Regatta Point Station. Take in the fabulous water views as the train follows the Macquarie Harbour foreshore and then the King River as you journey deep into the cool temperate rainforest. Marvel at the engineering feats as the train crosses the many bridges, including the formidable iron bridge which is one of the two major river crossings on the line.

Gordon River Cruise – Window Recliner

Step aboard Spirit of the Wild at the Gordon River Cruises terminal on the Esplanade, Strahan to commence a full day cruise. Travel to Hells Gates, the entrance to Macquarie Harbour before cruising alongside salmon and ocean trout farms to observe feeding time. Then cruise the Gordon River amidst some of the largest tracts of World Heritage wilderness on earth, cruising slowly under electric motors, to view the mirrored reflections. You then stop at Heritage Landing for a comfortable 30 minute rainforest walk on the boardwalk, where your guide will explain the unique flora and fauna in the area. Once back on board, enjoy lunch while cruising to Sarah Island. Disembark for a guided tour and walk among the ruins to learn about convict history.
