Make your own way to Cutta Cutta Caves, which is easily accessible from the Stuart Highway just 16.5-miles (27-kilometers) south of Katherine. Meet your guide and receive a brief orientation, then descend 50 feet (15 meters) into the limestone cave system.
This tropical cave system formed millions of years ago, and is one of only a few in Australia, which makes it a focus of scientific research. It has also played significance for Aboriginal culture and modern European history. Hear details about the area's geology and Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park, which is home to more than 170 bird species, such as the endangered Gouldian finch and hooded parrot. Some rare bats live here also, including the ghost bat and horseshoe bat.
When you have finished your cave tour, you might want to explore further on your own. The nature park offers a self-guided Tropical Woodland walk with information about local flora and fauna.
