Itinerary

Arriving in Las Vegas as the sun sets, you’ll see the famous lights coming on and the ‘strip’ coming alive. With each hotel having its own identity and many with outlandish themes, the strip is an outrageously colourful destination. World class entertainment, shopping and dining are guaranteed.

Distance: 171km (107miles)

You’ll be transferred to the Las Vegas depot where you’ll pick up your motorhome and have a full hand over and orientation session.

The journey begins: head off to Lake Mead and the magnificent Hoover Dam, a marvel of mid-20th century engineering. Moving on, you’ll come to the ghost town of Chloride, Arizona’s oldest silver mines. Here you can stroll around the eerie buildings and glimpse into the harsh way of life of the earliest mining days.

Next stop is Kingman, for many the epitome of Route 66 with its quirky attitude, all pervading nostalgia and colourful retro memorabilia.

Distance: 275km (172miles)

Follow the Aquarius and Juniper mountains and an hour from Kingman you’ll trundle into Seligman where the Roadkill Café is a convenient place to break. This is a great Arizona institution where great burgers and taxidermy go hand in hand.

Heading on you’ll come to an undisputed highlight of the trip: The Grand Canyon. One of the Seven Wonders of the World, it is a natural marvel. Explore the south rim where there are hiking trails for all abilities, or treat yourself to a helicopter ride across to the less visited north rim. Be sure to set the alarm for that extraordinary sunrise over the Canyon and wonder at the sun creeping along the deep ravines, turning darkness into gold.

Distance: 214km (134miles)

Head up to Lake Powell, a vast man-made reservoir that borders Arizona and Utah along the Colorado River. There are many boat trips on offer (Rainbow Bridge is always a popular destination) and you can hire boats too for a personal exploration of these pristine waters and the surrounding red rock scenery. Follow countless hiking trails along the water’s edge, across sand dunes and through gorgeous canyons – don’t miss Antelope Canyon, one of America’s most popular.

Distance: 195km (122miles)

Another iconic day beckons: aim for an early start and head east towards Monument Valley. The long, seemingly endless stretches of black tarmac shimmer in the heat, while monolithic sandstone buttes and formations break up the desert and form mesmerising backdrops. The famous Mittens are breath taking and like no other.

Dawn and dusk are when Monument Valley is most gorgeous so plan ahead and maybe even join a tour with a local Navajo guide to get the most from this incredible day.

Distance: 234km (146miles)

The road north from Monument Valley is classic scenery with lofty peaks, open desert prairie and huge vistas. Moab lies in the centre of Utah’s stunning canyonlands, essentially huge, natural playgrounds where you can enjoy white water rafting on the Colorado River, take an off-road jeep tour into the canyons or simply explore at your leisure on foot. Arches and Canyonlands National Parks are incredible, while Dead Horse State Park is less well known but a big draw.

Distance: 250km (156miles)

Stop off at Goblin State Park to admire the bizarre rock formations, often without crowds, before continuing to Capitol Reef National Park. This is the most beautiful section of the vast Waterpocket Fold, a 100 mile section of the Earth’s crust that was formed 50 million years ago.

Distance: 174km (109miles)

A stunning day’s drive awaits you today, along one of America’s most legendary stretches. Highway 12 National Scenic Byway is dramatic, zigzagging through Dixie National Forest before traversing Boulder Mountain, the highest forested plateau in North America.

Bryce Canyon has been shattered and shaped by the irresistible power of nature and, specifically, frost and rainwater. The limestone rock has been eroded and weathered into striking formations with slot canyons, windows and towers (known as hoodoos). Fairytale and Sunset Point are the best spots.

Distance: 139km (87miles)

From Bryce Canyon the road takes you to Zion National Park, yet another astonishing natural phenomenon. This is nature at its grandest, with massive rock buttresses rising high above the valley floor and with a dramatic palette of brilliant colours that dazzle as the sun passes overhead, creating startling light shows in the canyons.

Distance: 264km (165miles)

A slight detour might be worth considering today with an easy drive through the Valley of the Fire State Park in Nevada. You’ll arrive in Las Vegas for your final night in the RV that has been your home from home over this epic trip.
