September and October the most popular times to visit as this is the time when the trees change from green to bright oranges and yellows. Drive up into the mountains for spectacular panoramic views or drive along the New England coast to see the vibrant fall foliage colours along the roadsides and against the brilliant blue of the ocean.

Days 1 - 3: UK to New York
Days 4 - 5: Preston

Distance: (160miles)

Pick up your motorhome from the depot and drive around the Long Island Sound before heading northeast towards your first stop in the area of Preston. You might want to visit the Barnum Museum in Bridgeport where the flamboyant circus man was once Mayor.

Days 6 - 7: Sandwich

Distance: (125miles)

Todays journey you will take you down the scenic eastern shore of the Thames to Mystic Seaport, this once great whaling port and shipyard for fast clippers has a splendid outdoor museum with many old ships and examples of New England life two hundred years ago.

No trip to the area would be complete without a visit to Newport, Rhode Island to see the massive summer mansions of the Vanderbilts and where the setting was for F. Scott Fitzgerald’s and Robert Redford’s The Great Gatsby.

Days 8 - 9: Plymouth

Distance: (55miles)

Make sure you allow time to visit Hyannis, the Kennedy family’s hometown before continuing north towards Plymouth where the Mayflower landed the Pilgrims in 1620, perhaps visit Plymouth Rock where it is said that the Pilgrims first set foot in America. You may also wish to make a stop at the Plimoth Plantation, a recreation of a Pilgrim’s village from 1627 and learn about their way of life.

Days 10 - 11: Salisbury Beach

Distance: (145miles)

Continue north bypassing the city of Boston and onward to Lexington where there were the first skirmishes that started the Revolutionary War. North Salem in New Hampshire is worth a stop as it is home to America’s 4,000 year old Stonehenge. Salem is also on most people’s wish lists and it’s here that you can learn about the history of the infamous witchcraft trials in 1692.

Days 12 - 13: Bar Harbour

Distance: (235miles)

Today’s destination is Bar Harbour on Mt Desert Island which is surrounded by the cliffs and seascapes of the Acadia National Park. The state of Maine is best known for its dramatic and scenic coastline so make sure you allow plenty of time for exploring.

Days 14 - 15: Mount Blue State Park

Distance: (160miles)

Head inland to Maine’s capital of Bangor and then continue your drive through the state’s picturesque interior to the Mount Blue State Park, which is home to moose, red squirrels and the more elusive black bear and coyote. Places you might like to visit include the picturesque Webb Beach and nearby Center Hill.

Days 16 - 18: Bethlehem

Distance: (100miles)

Continue your journey into New Hampshire and the White Mountain National Forest where the mountains get higher and where Mount Washington, at 6,288 feet, dominates the skyline. A visit to the summit of Mount Washington on the 1869 coal-fired cog railway is highly recommended.

Days 19 - 20: Gifford Woods

Distance: (125miles)

Today you will leave New Hampshire and cross into Vermont and as you head to the year round resort surrounding Killington Peak. You could make a stop in Hanover to visit the world famous Dartmouth College, one of the nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution.

Suggested Campsite: Gifford Woods or Ricker Pond

Days 21 - 22: Arlington

Distance: (60miles)

You could argue that Norman Rockwell captured the golden age of Americana more memorably than anyone else and it was in his home in Arlington where he created many of the covers for the Saturday Evening Post in the 1940’s and 1950’s, you can see his paintings at the Norman Rockwell Exhibition which is close by.

Days 23 - 24: Lazy River

Distance: (140miles)

Today’s journey takes will you into New York State as you head south following the Hudson River eventually bringing you out at Hyde Park, the birthplace and home of Franklin D Roosevelt and where both he and wife Eleanor are buried.

Days 25 - 26: New York to UK

Distance: (75miles)

This morning you will make the short journey back to Newark to return your RV before transferring to the airport for your overnight flight back to the UK.
