Johannesburg is the capital of the Gauteng Province and is also South Africa’s largest city. Melrose Arch or Sandton are the two best places to stay.

- A visit to the Soweto Township is a must: once the home to Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
- Mandela’s former home which is now a museum.
Further afield
Just a few hours northwest of Johannesburg and nestled in the mountains of the North West Province is the entertainment complex of Sun City. Combine a stay at Sun City the neighbouring Pilanesberg Game Reserve, South Africa’s most densely populated Big Five game park and you could start or finish your South African tour in style.
