Cape Town & The Garden Route

On arrival in Cape Town you’ll be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel for the next 2 nights.

The following afternoon enjoy an included tour to Bo Kaap (The Malay Quarter) which is situated on the slopes of Signal Hill above the city centre. Continue to the cable car station at the foot of Table Mountain for a ride to the top for some amazing views across Cape Town and a glass of sparkling wine. Continue to the V&A Waterfront for an included Welcome Dinner.

Transfer to the Motorhome depot where you will collect your motorhome and start your overland journey to the West Coast with its wide, open spaces, charming fishing villages, unspoilt beaches and abundant animal and marine life.

The pretty little railway town of Touws River sits between Barrydale and Ladismith in the little Karoo. Touws River is set on the fringes of the Klein Karoo, basically a valley sandwiched between the Langeberg and the Outeniqua Mountains, which in turn separates the Little Karoo from the Garden Route’s coastal strip.

On the journey to Oudtshoorn make a stop at Cango Caves for an included Heritage Tour. The 20 million-year-old Cango Caves system consists of a series of hidden chambers cut deep into a thick limestone rock layer, it is one of the world’s great natural wonders, sculptured by nature through the ages.

Oudtshoorn is a town in the Klein Karoo area of South Africa’s Western Cape. It’s known for its ostrich farms and rests along the Route 62 wine route.

The following day we have included a morning tour to an Ostrich Farm where you can learn more about these remarkable birds and their fascinating nature. In the afternoon we’ll continue to Bufflesdrift Game Lodge to meet Jabari, Bulelo and Malaika, three orphan elephants originally from Kruger National Park, as part of their daily routine you will have the opportunity to give them a brush.

As you leave Oudtshoorn behind your journey will take you via Meirings Poort where you can stop at the beautiful Meirings Poort Waterfall. Continue to Camdeboo National Park boasts 43 species of mammals, 336 species of plants and over 225 recorded species of bird life as well as the Cape Buffalo which is one of the Big Five.

The following afternoon we have included a guided tour to the Valley of Desolation which starts with an introduction to the Fauna and Flora of the Graaff-Reinet region. Game may be spotted on the drive up to the Valley of Desolation such as Kudu, Blesbuck, Springbok and Mountain Rhebuck. At the Toposcope a brief overview of the surrounding mountains is given, as well as information on the way of life of the people of Graaff-Reinet.

The evenings are punctuated with the calls of lion, spotted hyena, and jackal while francolin and bokmakierie herald each dawn.

Continue your journey from Addo to Sedgefield which forms part of the Garden Route of South Africa. Travel through Port Elizabeth, Jeffreys Bay, Storms River and Knysna. Make a stop in Tsitsikamma and visit the Tsitsikamma National Park and take a short hike and visit The Big Tree. Continue through the town of Knysna and enjoy lunch at one of the many restaurants located in the Waterfront.

High on the must-see lists of most visitors to South Africa is the Garden Route, and with good reason: you can’t help but be seduced by the glorious natural beauty. The Garden Route's range of topography, vegetation, wildlife, and outdoor activities is remarkable. Travel to Hermanus, also known of the Whale Coast of South Africa. Explore the whales, sharks, wine routes, fynbos, birding, golf courses, penguins, mountain biking, hiking trails and adventure activities in this beautiful region, the Cape Whale Coast.

Hermanus is the whale watching capital of South Africa and the whale season is generally from June - mid December every year and whales can often be spotted from land. In whale watching season we highly recommend a whale watching cruise which can be anything from 1 ½ - 3 hours in duration depending of the sightings.

Depart Hermanus for Stellenbosch and make a stop at Stoney Point, home to an African Penguin Colony. Roughly 3,600 penguins now live at Stony Point's old whaling station, increasing from the two who originally ventured here in 1985. A wine tasting is included at Lanzerac Wine Estate this afternoon, home to the world’s first bottled Pinotage and one of the oldest heritage farms in the Western Cape dating back to 1692, and which has been cultivating award-winning wines for decades.

Spend some time exploring Stellenbosch or perhaps take the short trip to Franschhoek where you can take the Franschhoek Wine Tram. On the final evening there will be a chocolate and wine pairing followed by a farewell dinner at Spier Wine Estate.
